Why You Need A Certified Professional Home Builder

A Certified Professional Home Builder

is Much More Than a Licensed Builder

Towne and Country Homes received the Certified Professional Home Builder designation in 2006.  This designation offers a genuine and profitable distinction between residential builders.  The Certified Professional Home Builder (CPHB) program is a highly successful residential builder certification program that helps builders maximize their professionalism, customer service and homeowner satisfaction.   The CPHB members have the following advantages:
  • Education: The Licensing Law requires most residential builders to take only three continuing education hours per year.  In contrast, CPHB companies must have 16 hours each year – more than five times as much.
  • Code Certification:  CPHB members must pass the ICC Residential Building Contactor C Exam or its equivalent.
  • References: CPHB companies must provide references from a financial institute, five homeowners, three trade contractors, three suppliers, and generally two current CPHB members.  The Licensing Law does not include a similar requirement for residential contractors.
  • Experience: A residential –basic contractor must have two years of residential experience under the Licensing Law, with the CPHB program requires a least three years experience.
  • Focus: The CPHB program requires that a builder’s primary business be residential construction or remodeling.  The licensing Law does not.
  • Insurance: CPHB companies must have more general liability insurance and builder’s risk insurance than the Licensing Law requires for most residential builders.
  • Code of Ethics: CPHB companies must agree to comply with the National Association of Home Builders Code of Ethics, while the Licensing Law does not mandate compliance with those standards.
  • HBA Membership:  CPHB members must join their local homebuilders association therefore they generally have more current industry knowledge and skill than association non-members.  The Licensing Law does not impose that requirement.
  • Warranty:  CPHB companies must use a warranty and warranty procedures approved by the Housing Institute or ones substantially equivalent.  The Licensing Law has a warrant provision, but it does not mandate specific coverage.
  • Home Inspections:  CPHB companies must allow a qualified professional home inspector conduct a fair inspection.  The Licensing Law does not include this requirement.
  • Mandatory Binding Arbitration:  CPHB companies must offer arbitration to homebuyers.  A similar requirement isn’t required in the Licensing Law.
  • Better Business Bureau Rating:  CPHB members can’t have a negative rating with the Better Business Bureau.  The Licensing Law does not have this requirement.
  • Dispute Resolution Process:  The CPHB program has a dispute resolution process.  The Licensing Law doesn’t have a similar process
  • Renewal: CPHB companies must renew membership annually.  State license renewal is every other year.
